Developed in 1902 by a Welsh inventor, Edgar Hooley, tarmacadam is a product specifically designed for road surfacing and consists of crushed stone, sand and tar. Its name is an amalgamation of ‘tar’ and the surname of the engineer who created a more crude predecessor in the 1800s, John McAdam.
Originally comprising tar and aggregate, the mixture was compacted using a steamroller on the road surface. This was later improved with pitch, Portland cement and resin.
